2005. Hardcover. First Ed. First Printing. ISSUED AS A LIMITED SIGNED NUMBERED EDITION (AND A SMALLER LETTERED STATE) ONLY--NO TRADE EDITION. This title is exceptionally scarce because it was offered for sale only for a short period of time as a pre-publication offer and was limited to the exact number of purchasers. Thus there were only 303 Numbered Signed Copies (+ the 52 lettered copies). Thus the book does not even have an ISBN number or a cover price at all. Additionally a very few copies for were printed for the staff of CD. These were hand marked as "PC" for "Publisher's Copy" instead of a number. Now this short novel is, in my personal opinion, one of Garton's best works ever, Creepy and weird, with the feel of the old pulp horror publications, pre-eminently, of course, "Weird Tales". On the DJ flap it describes "Crawlers!" as "a pulp throw-back work in the tradition of "Day of the Triffids" by Wyndham. Well, it is about a very strange, creepy garden with some hellish plants and there are certainly parallels to be drawn with Wyndham's iconic novel, but it brings to my mind nothing so much as Clark Ashton Smith's masterpiece "The Garden of Adompha" and if you have that story in either its original pulp publication or the Arkham House collection by Smith, "Genius Loci" then you are fortunate enough to be able to read it and scare yourself silly. Garton's work to me is definitely more in that mold (or should I say "mulch") than it is "Triffids". But either way this is a very special work by a very very excellent horror writer. Also consider this--303 numbered, plus 26 lettered, plus say about 10 Publisher's Copies, so a total of about 339 copies, give or take. Genius Loci, though granted a lot older, had, if memory serves, about 3000 copies printed, give or take. Whatever, lucky is the reader/collector who can place those two books side by side in his personal bookshelf of cherished collectibles. Glen Chadbourne contributes the suitably sinister full color DJ painting. Mint hand marked "PC" copy in blue boards and Mint full color DJ. N° de réf. du libraire 9312
