A propos de cet article

Language: English . Brand New Book. Critical Survey of Drama, Second Revised Edition, combines, updates, and expands two earlier Salem Press reference sets: Critical Survey of Drama, Revised Edition, English Language Series (1994), and Critical Survey of Drama, Foreign Language Series (1986). This new eight-volume set contains 613 essays, of which 548 discuss individual dramatists and 65 cover overview topics. The set also contains lists of major dramatic awards, a detailed time line of world drama history, a glossary of dramatic terms and movements, and a bibliography. Of the revised edition s 548 profiles, 90 are completely new essays, primarily reflecting playwrights who have recently come to be regarded as established figures in theater. More than 110 author profiles have been updated and revised to include the authors new works and achievements, developments in their personal lives, more current analysis, and updated bibliographies. All other author profiles have been re-edited and the bibliographies have been updated and annotated. Each dramatist essay starts with direct ready-reference material: birth/death dates and places and list of the author s major dramatic works. Every essay also includes a brief survey of the author s publications in other literary forms, a summary of professional achievements and awards, and an extended biographical sketch. The bulk of each entry is a clearly written, extensive critical analysis of the writer s major dramatic works and career. Each entry ends with an annotated bibliography of secondary works about the author, providing a solid list of sources for further study. Overview essays, which are arranged under broad subject headings, cover dramatic traditions in the United States and other parts of the world, as well as various genres and techniques. The set includes more than 30 new overview essays. More than 25 of the original overview essays have been updated to reflect current trends in the theater. In addition to the overview essays, volume 8 includes an annotated general bibliography; a chronological listing (by birth dates); a geographical index that separates dramatists by the geographical areas in which they have lived or worked; a categorized list of dramatists, which groups them by movement, dominant genre, or ethnic affiliation; and a comprehensive subject index. A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

These volumes combine, update and expand the reference sets Critical Survey of Drama: Revised Edition, English Language Series and Critical Survey of Drama, Foreign Language Series. They contain 613 essays on individual dramatists and overview topics.

From Booklist:

By now the format of Magill's Critical Surveys is a familiar one. Familiarity here doesn't breed contempt but rather an expectation of a solid reference work, carefully organized, up-to-date, and easy-to-use.

Combining material from the Critical Survey of Drama: English Language Series (rev. ed., 1994) and the Critical Survey of Drama: Foreign Language Series (1986) with a generous selection of new articles, these volumes offer 538 profiles spanning the ages and the continents. The 79 new articles include those on a number of playwrights whose work has been widely seen onstage during the last few years, among them Lee Blessing, Eric Bogosian, Rebecca Gilman, Spalding Gray, Tony Kushner, Alfred Uhry, and Paula Vogel. Some 88 articles have been updated to reflect changes in both the work and the lives of the subjects. Broadening the coverage to include writers from other parts of the world strengthens this work, and it lives up to the familiar line about all the world being a stage. Playwrights from all the major European nations are represented, as are those from the continents of Africa and Asia, the Caribbean region, and more.

As in other Critical Surveys, the signed articles are arranged alphabetically by dramatist and range in length from two or three to 10 or more pages. Each lists the author's principal dramatic works, other literary works, achievements, biography, a brief critical analysis, other major works, a bibliography, and a contributor byline. Of particular importance to anyone doing drama research, the dates of both first performance and first publication are provided for every play cited. The author profiles are followed by extended essays on a variety of topics, such as American regional theater, Restoration drama, Japanese drama, television drama, and acting styles. Additional resources include a general bibliography, a glossary of dramatic terms and movements, a list of major awards, a dramatic time line, and a chronological list of dramatists. Indexes include both geographical and categorized indexes of dramatists and a general subject index.

Among the notable features of this set are the pictures or photos of many of the entrants (very helpful for students' assignments) and the variety of appended material. High-school, public, and academic libraries will be well served by this well-crafted and carefully plotted resource. RBB
