Description du livre H.J. Smith & Co; Chicago; 1888/1889, 1889. ; 253 pp.; ; VG; Second annual edition. Though the guide section applies its 253 pages only to Tour Route No.2, the folded map (c.1888) in rear displays both Route 1 and Route 2. Tour No.1 in green, starts at Omaha & Kansas City, west to Denver, NW through Wyoming, Idah Oregon and Washington. Tour No.2 in shown in red includes a large loop through Salt Lake City, Pueblo, Denver and Cheyenne, west from Salt Lake through Nevada splitting at Sacramento north to Portland, south to San Diego. "Crofutt's Overland Tours No.2. portions of the Union Pacific, Central Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande, Southern Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railways and Auxiliary Lines by Rail, Water, and Stage--10,000 Miles."--(map caption) "The compiler gives detailed and authentic information of cities, towns, villages, stations, government forts and camps for the westbound traveler on the Central Pacific Railroad. Also described are area natural resources, Western personalties and tribut railroads from the transcontinental route, in Nevada. Crofutt gives station-to-station descriptions, with rich mixtures of history and local lore. Of the many 19th century Western railroad guide books sold at railroad stations and book shops, Crofutt's received the largest circulation of them all. Even today, book collectors consider a crofutt more desirable than a Shearer or a Williams."--Paher #404 (discussing the entire series). . .cf.Flake=2595.
