A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

This little brochure of the trip down the Irrawaddy is to give my countrymen a bird's eye view of the inner conflict in post-war independent Burma and the shape of things to come if and when we will them. It is by no means the purpose of this booklet to hurt, but rather to remedy the remediable. We Burmans must choose the democratic way with all its defects and flaws, strong in the conviction that we can, if we will, eradicate its weaknesses and make out of it a vehicle for further social improvement. Democracy is the only type of political and social control in the whole world with which the world can never be done, because it has the lasting quality of growth and development.

About the Author:

Marked for execution by the Japanese Kempetai (secret police) near the end of WWII because of his views on Burmese nationalism and independence, he barely escaped when a friend tipped him off and he went into the juncle in the dark of night. Rev. On Kin was born into a Buddhist family in Twante in 1894 and converted to Christianity at the age of 22. He attended Cushing High School, Rangoon (1914-16) before teaching at middle schools in Pegu and Twante (1916-20). From 1920-24, he was in the first graduating class of the Leonard Theological College, Jabalpur, India, where he was awarded the prize for preaching.
