From Booklist: Published by UXL, Gale's imprint for reference books written at the reading level of the average seventh-grader and focusing on curriculum topics, The Crusades Reference Library covers the First Crusade (1095-99) through the Ninth Crusade (1271-72). Each volume--Almanac, Biographies, and Primary Sources--begins with a "Reader's Guide" providing a short introduction to the Crusades, a glossary, and a time line. All chapters in the three volumes end with a bibliography of print and online sources for further reading and research and an index. The cumulative index is in a free supplemental volume.

In 13 concise chapters, Almanac discusses such topics as the conquering of Jerusalem by the caliph Umar, pilgrimages to the Holy Land, the traditions of chivalry, and territorial expansion and colonization as motivations for the Crusades. Its explanation of the difference and divisions between Sunni and Shiite Islam alone is useful reading for a wider audience. The volume begins with a section on research and activities for students and their teachers.

Biographies includes entries on 25 key figures. Both well-known figures, such as the Muslim leader Saladin and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and those who are maybe less familiar, such as Anna Comnena, the twelfth-century author and Byzantine princess, are covered. Each entry has a boxed quotation by its subject, and most include portraits. The entries are readable and well organized.

Primary Sources consists of 24 full or excerpted documents, first-person accounts, treaties, and speeches; the complete Magna Carta; and a section from the epic poem The Song of Roland. This volume is the cornerstone of The Crusades Reference Library, as it illustrates the history for the school audience. Sidebars define highlighted words, and grey-boxed paragraphs explain historical figures or events mentioned. All excerpts from the primary sources are followed by text that illuminates the history of the document and poses discussion questions.

Each volume includes more than 40 illustrations--from photographs of churches and towns to pages from illuminated manuscripts. A listing of information on these illustrations would have been a helpful and valuable addition.

The Crusades Reference Library is a recommended purchase for school and public libraries. Each volume can be purchased separately but they work better together. Lisa Johnston
