A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

Newly available in paperback, this novella focuses on that traditional Basque activity -- smuggling -- and the repercussions of such activity in a conservative farming village. "With nine books and numerous article to his credit, Robert Laxalt's writings have been read throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and South America. His book "The Basque hotel" was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in fiction, and his novella "A cup of tea in Pamplona" led to his being awarded "El Tambor de Orr" (The Golden Drum), one of Spain's most prestigious literary honours, in 1986. Since 1954, Laxalt has served in a number of positions at the University of Nevada, most recently as the first occupant of the Distinguished Nevada Author Chair.".

In this slim tale, Laxalt shows the ugly, desperate, and sometimes violent world of the contrabandiers, Basque smugglers in the Pyrenees. Set in the 1960s, the terse story begins with Nikolas, driven by his family?s financial despair, taking on work from Gregorio, the patrón of a small team of smugglers. Nikolas must smuggle fifty horses over the mountain ridges between France and Spain. If he?s caught, jail and ruin are certain; death is possible. This engrossing novella, told with tight narration and compelling dialogue, shows the grinding poverty and ethnic tensions in Basque lands, fifty years ago.
