Date d'édition : 1898

Reliure : Hardcover

Edition : 1st Edition

Description :

Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix] x-xv [xvi] [17] 18-269 [270-272: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], rebound in three-quarter leather. First British edition. A collection of short fiction including fantasy, crime stories and science fiction, all with Australian settings. Sonnenschein's edition was printed on pulpy paper as a cheap yellowback at 2/0. The book was also published in Melbourne by G. Robertson in 1898. "'The Genius of the Glass' features a mind-reading machine that works even after the subject is dead. 'The Silent Sepulchre' features premature burial, catalepsy, hypnosis, comas and a man-eating dog. The title story, mixing horror and adventure in the outback, involves incestuous cannibals, lepers, giant wombats, romantic treachery, and gold. The author shows some rough vigor and imaginative touches but lacks the skill to use his material to best advantage. Still, an intriguing collection." - Robert Eldridge. Day, The Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature (1963), p. 47. Larnach, Materials Towards a Checklist of Australian Fantasy to 1937 (1950), p. 14. Hubin (1994), p. 451. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Topp, Victorian Yellowbacks & Paperbacks Volume IX, p. 134. Text block printed on pulp paper stock and thus darkened and a bit brittle, rear joint repaired, a good copy of a rare book. (#149896). N° de réf. du libraire 149896
