Octavo, pp. [1-8] 2-487 [488: printer's imprint], original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition, first binding. The fifth and final novel published during Lindsay's lifetime. Though boring, the work has its memorable pages, even chapters, according to Colin Wilson who spent two years getting through it. E. H. Visiak stated that he initially believed that the book was almost unreadable, but upon rereading it -- slowly -- he found it fascinating and was so impressed that he wrote a fifty page critique of it. Brian Stableford says the novel is "marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." E. F. Bleiler considers DEVIL'S TOR to be Lindsay's "magnum opus." Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-218. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1022. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 140. Schlobin, The Literature of Fantasy 664. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature I, pp. 391-95. Tymn (ed), Fantasy Literature, pp. 127-28. Bleiler (1978), p. 124. Reginald 09071. Several very faint damp marks on cloth, page edges and first and last few leaves foxed, a very good copy with bright gold stamping on spine panel in good plus 7/6 first issue pictorial dust jacket (cream paper stock printed in black with woodcut illustration of Devil's Tor on front panel) with wear at edges, mostly lower spine end and corner tips, tiny chip from upper rear fore-edge corner, 35x15 mm v-chip at upper rear spine fold, 20 mm closed tear at upper front spine fold, and some general dust soiling. An uncommon book seldom found in dust jacket. (#152549). N° de réf. du libraire 152549
