Octavo, twelve inserted plates with illustrations from photographs, original pictorial gray cloth stamped in white and black. First edition. Grenfell, an English physician and advocate of the "muscular" Christianity so characteristic of the Victorian period, went to sea as a medical missionary and, after discovering the woeful conditions of people (including English emigres) in Labrador, Canada, devoted the rest of his life to building an impressive network of charitable institutions there. His writing, both of fiction and non-fiction, helped aroused support for his causes. Neat 1924 gift inscription on the front paste-down. A clean, near fine copy. (#133410).
