In Bud Roberston's section of the Nevins bibliography, he gives a rather mixed opinion of this book, calling it "the best narrative pertaining to the 47th Illinois", but lamenting that it "succumbs to the author's penchant for philosophical sermons and lack of real personal observations" [Nevins I, 66]. The memoir, after all, was published nearly 50 years after the war. Coulter accords the "philosophical sermons" more value, describing it as "an unusual narrative by and unusual man; something like a philosophical essay interspersed with reconstructed conversations" [Coulter 59]. This copy is from the library of Civil War historian James I. "Bud" Robertson and has his bookplate on the front pastedown. It is a lovely bright copy. (Nevins I, 66; Coulter 59). Near Fine binding.
