Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4-70; [1-3] 4-48, original decorated brown cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in silver and blind. Later (first hardcover?) edition. George Munro's edition of Marryat's collection of short fiction, THE GHOST OF CHARLOTTE CRAY, AND OTHER STORIES, was first published as number 208 of his "Seaside Library Pocket Edition," dated April 15, 1884. It collected four stories, three of which are ghost stories: "The Ghost of Charlotte Cray," "The Invisible Tenants of Rushmere" and "Little White Souls." The fourth tale, "Amy's Lover" is not supernatural. These stories were published earlier in book form in Marryat's A MOMENT OF MADNESS AND OTHER STORIES, three volumes (London: F. V. White, 1883), a rare book not in the Sadleir or Wolff collections, and in THE GHOST OF CHARLOTTE CRAY (Leipzig: Tauchnitz, 1883). This later Munro's Sons edition (part of their "Crescent Edition" series) prints only two of the four stories: the title story and "The Invisible Tenants of Rushmere." Marryat's stories are here preceded by a 70-page short novel, THE DUCIE DIAMONDS by Charles Blatherwick, a minor Victorian novelist who wrote some crime fiction. George Munro published two paperbound editions of THE DUCIE DIAMONDS in 1884. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1109. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 350. Bleiler (1978), p. 133. Reginald 09686. Text is printed on very bad wood pulp paper which was also used for the endpapers. The paper is quite browned, but not broken or chipped. There are some damp stains to the cloth. Nevertheless, this is a remarkable survivor, the book being in very good condition overall. Jim Whitford bookplate on the front paste-down. A very scarce book. (#151645).
