A propos de cet article

One issue of this serial is offered here, namely the sizeable issue for July, 1903. PUBLISHER : Winnipeg : Jafnaðarmannafélag Íslendinga, 1903. DESCRIPTION : 96 pages/s. ; 14 cm./sm. CONDITION : Very Good to VG+ in printed paper covers. SERIES : Jafnaðarmannarit ; 2 SUBJECTS : Economics / Hagfræði; The Economy / Efnahagsmál ; Western Icleanders [i.e., North American Icelanders] / Vestur-Íslendingar. Dagskrá 2 (II) was a newspaper published in Winnipeg over a two year period. It was edited and mostly written by an Icelandic immmigrant to Canada, a leading writer and physician, Sigurður Júlíus Jóhannesson (1868-1956). In its pages he campaigned for the temperance (prohibition) cause, women's suffrage, freedom of religion, and socialism. His liberal sentiments incurred the hostility of the establishment of the Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America, headquartered in Winnipeg [Source: Wilhelm Kristjanson, handwritten notes, undated]. The editor was "one of the most prominant and popular of the Icelandic Canadian poets. From the time of his arrival in Canada in 1899, he played a . . . prominent part in community life as a physician, journalist, poet [and translator], temperance worker and a zealous advocate of social and political reform", according to the scholar Kristjanson (The Icelandic People in Manitoba, p. 489). The editor closed this periodical when he left to attend medical studies in Chicago, but he was to return to Winnipeg for other editorial and authorial accomplishments. Watson Kirkonnell includes the author's poetry in his anthology, Canadian Overtones, Columbia Press, 1935. Referenced in Hjartar, pp. 42 and 73. Rare. N° de réf. du libraire 35329
