Description :

First edition. 4to, ff. 240, [36] index, all text printed within borders. (Not in Medina BHA; Palau 209720) Transcription of the arguments made by Palafox (1600 - 59: Archbishop of Puebla and Mexico, and acting viceroy for 5 mos.) in his dispute with the Jesuits over issues of episcopal rights and jurisdiction. Palau notes that the book was written partly by Palafox, and partly by his Vicar General and other priests of his diocese; it was reprinted several times, and translated into Italian: this edition was issued while he was still in Mexico and at the height of his conflict with the Jesuits and other orders. Palafox attempted, ultimately unsuccessfully, to restrain the power the orders, particularly the Jesuits, which had grown so immense that they were practically governments unto themselves. Although the king of Spain ruled in Palafox's favor, and he even enjoyed papal support, such was the power of the Jesuits that he was withdrawn from his important position in Puebla and made bishop of a small diocese in Spain, where he died. Much revered popularly for his holiness and defense of native populations of Mexico -- he was referred to as "the second Las Casas", the Jesuits effectively blocked his process of sanctification. His Defensa is an important document in Mexican ecclesiastical history , closely reasoned and thoroughly documented from church authorities. This particular copy is ex-libris from a Scottish Benedictine library, the only library marking being a bookplate on the obverse of front cover. Binding is contemporary vellum, with title inked along spine. The front cover is separated from the text block; otherwise a fine copy, very clean. N° de réf. du libraire 5228
