Theodore Fujita proposed the existence of a small–scale diverging wind feature that could cause damaging winds at the surface. He also proposed that it was responsible for a number of aircraft crashes when encountered on takeoff or landing. This paper describes the scientific discoveries Fujita made documenting the existence of this wind shear phenomenon that he named the downburst. It describes events that led to the remarkable reduction in aircraft accidents and saving of lives because of the discovery of the downburst. It is also intended to give the reader insight into the man himself. -- Includes index. "National Technical Information Service". A downburst is created by an area of significantly rain-cooled air that, after reaching ground level, spreads out in all directions producing strong winds.-- Does the author's name sound familiar?? It should, as Mr. Fujita started the Fujita Scale for judging the intensity of tornadoes - and is the author of this book from the University of Chicago as well as the Professor of Meteorolgy there. This book is a report of Projects NIMROD and JAWS in 122 technical pages with graphs (many in color), photographs, tables, etc. N° de réf. du libraire 40792
