Lacks volume 8; lower cover of volume 9 detached; head of spine of volume 9 worn (about 1 1/2 inches); slight wear to foot of spine and spine midsection of volume 3; general wear to extremities (chiefly to edges and corners); previous owner's ink inscription (first preliminary leaf, volume 1); covers slightly scratched and rubbed (general shelfwear); some internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges, preliminaries, and in the proximities of the plates); else a fairly well-preserved set. [ca. 300] pages per volume (including plates). Chief among the 19th century large-format illustrated editions of the plays, this set originally boasted of "One Hundred and Sixty-three Historical Pictures" (see advertisement, volume 1); though considerably lessened over the course of publication, the edition still managed to incorporate the major delineators of the Bard's works (including Fuseli, W. Hamilton, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and others) as well as the major London-based engravers (Bartolozzi, Collyer, Stow, Charles Warren, and others). Also notable for the inclusion of biographical and critical prefaces by Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson (volume 1). 8 volumes (of 9); bound uniformly in full black morocco, gilt-stamped and decorated spines, covers stamped and decorated gilt and blind, dark blue/gray endpapers, a.e.g. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" Tall (large).
