Description :

FINE. Large gloss pictorial boards, map endpapers. SIGNED by EDITOR/COMPILER of the articles. From a nation whose history is traditionally 'recorded' in the minds and words of Elders, this book was complied by the grandchildren and great grandchildren to put into print the memories and words of -their- Elders who were caught between two warring nations during the WWII battles for Saipan and Tinian in the Pacific Ocean realm of Micronesia. This is the first time in their history that such written records have been made. Pictured are the children and their personal relatives; the stories, ilustrations and memories depict what they went through - first, invaded by the Japanese, then enduring those years and eventually, fighting along side the Americans to drive the Japanese away. Finally, one of the islands, Tinian, served as the staging location from where the Atomic Bombs were flown out of to bring the war in the Pacific to an end. These are stories previously unpublished and unheralded, for the roles these heroic men and women played in the retrieval of their nation, their fredom and their dignity. The United States military forces did not accomplish the job alone. Their descendents know it as personally as the families of the American fighters know their own stories, and now the Micronesians are reminding the rest of the world that they as a people did not stand idly by during the fight for liberty.
