Exhibited at Oxford Museum of Modern Art, Art in Production: Soviet Textiles, Fashion and Ceramics 1917-1935, in 1984. "Having exhibited alongside her husband Rodchenko in the now infamous 1921 Moscow exhibition 5 x 5 = 25 with Popova, Exter, Vesnin, Malevich, and others, Stepanova has since been recognized as one of the pioneers of Rayonism, itself a development from the Constructivist vision of the Bolshevik years. Part of this development was to free imagery from the confines of painting into the more functional everyday items such as clothing and ceramics. In 1924, Stepanova and Popova produced a report for the Institute of Arts and Culture, which clearly defined the main tasks for artists working in industrial textiles. They were to replace traditional floral patterns with designs of a geometric character, of which these studies are examples." From the Oxford MOMA catalogue. This and the following two items were given to Oxford MOMA by Rodchenko/Stepanova’s son, holder of the Estate, as a gift. It was de-accessioned by MOMA to raise exhibition funds. In box-Plexiglas frame as shown at the Oxford exhibition, with original descriptive label verso. Such works almost never come to market as they’re all in museums or on loan from the estate, which does not sell privately. Please request scans. N° de réf. du libraire 273
