Description :

Original Wraps. 8vo. 82 pages. 21 cm. First separate edition. "Reprinted from the Transactions of the Literary and philosophical society of Liverpool. " Significant study on the Essenes, drawing on the writings of Hellenist Greek contemporaries, the church fathers, and Rabbinic and Christian sources, with a survey of major writings from the 16th century to writings from 1863 on or mentioning the Essenes; the author relies heaviest on the works of Graetz and Frankel. Christian David Ginsburg was an English Masoretic scholar born in Warsaw in 1831. "He was converted in 1846, and was for a time connected with the Liverpool branch of the London Society's Mission to the Jews, but retired in 1863, devoting himself entirely to literary work. Besides editions of the Song of Songs, 1857, and Ecclesiastes, 1861, he published essays on the Karaites, 1862; and Essenes, 1864; and a full account in English of the Cabala, 1865. He then devoted himself to Masoretic studies, publishing the text and translation of Elias Levita's 'Massoret ha-Massoret' in 1867, and of Jacob b. Hayyim's 'Introduction to the Rabbinic Bible' in the same year. - 1906 JE. TheEssenes were "a sect of Second Temple Judaismthat flourished from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century CE which some scholars claim seceded from theZadokitepriests. Being much fewer in number than thePhariseesand theSadducees (the other two major sects at the time) , the Essenes lived in various cities but congregated in communal life dedicated toasceticism(some groups practiced celibacy) , voluntary poverty, anddaily immersion. Many separate but related religious groups of that era shared similarmystic, eschatological, messianic, andasceticbeliefs. These groups are collectively referred to by various scholars as the ‘Essenes. ’Josephusrecords that Essenes existed in large numbers, and thousands lived throughoutRoman Judaea" (Wikipedia 2014) .
