Subjects: Wetern [i.e. North American] icelanders/ Vestur-Íslendingar; New Iceland/Nýja-Ísland; Fiction/Skáldsögur; Küchler, Carl, 1869-1945. Reerenced in Hjartar, p. 61. The author was "one of those few Western Icelandic writers who gained popularity on both sides of the Atlantic" (Neijmann, The Icelandic Voice, , p. 146). He came to Canada at a young age. Neijmann states "the author creates a folklore, a body of legends for the West Icelanders . . .". His novel of Nova Scotia "has considerable cultural and historical value" (see Einarsson, History or Icelandic Prose Writers, p. 241). The author "emigrated from Iceland to Nova Scotia with his parents at age nine; became a schoolteacher in western Canada, 1889; after his retirement lived at Elfros, Saskatchewan (Kirkconnell, Canadian overtones)".
