Synopsis : A tall, yellow-haired, young European traveler calling himself ?Mogor dell?Amore,? the Mughal of Love, arrives at the court of the Emperor Akbar, lord of the great Mughal empire, with a tale to tell that begins to obsess the imperial capital, a tale about a mysterious woman, a great beauty believed to possess powers of enchantment and sorcery, and her impossible journey to the far-off city of Florence.

The Enchantress of Florence
is the story of a woman attempting to command her own destiny in a man?s world. It is the story of two cities, unknown to each other, at the height of their powers?the hedonistic Mughal capital, in which the brilliant Akbar the Great wrestles daily with questions of belief, desire, and the treachery of his sons, and the equally sensual city of Florence during the High Renaissance, where Niccolò Machiavelli takes a starring role as he learns, the hard way, about the true brutality of power.

Vivid, gripping, irreverent, bawdy, profoundly moving, and completely absorbing, The Enchantress of Florence is a dazzling book full of wonders by one of the world?s most important living writers.

Critique: "A brilliant, fascinating, generous novel...wonderful" ( Guardian)

"A wild and whirling novel" ( Observer)

"For Rushdie, as for the artists he writes about, the pen is a magician's wand. There is more magic than realism in this latest novel. But it is, I think, one of his best. If The Enchantress of Florence doesn't win this year's Man Booker I'll curry my proof copy and eat it" ( Financial Times)

"My first desire on finishing it was to go back and re-read it. Like all of Rushdie's work, the playfulness, the passion, the erudition and the sensuousness go hand in hand. It's immensely's one of his best" ( Scotsman)

"An exuberant mix of fantasy and history" ( Daily Mail)

"[Rushdie] has a rare mastery of language, and when you read his work you cannot help but feel you are in the company of a mighty intelligence... Salman Rushdie is undoubtedly one of our greatest storytellers" ( Herald)

"Mesmerising, picaresque... It is a boisterous tale piled high with sex and adventure and fantasy" ( Tatler)

Description de la librairie : Located in the heart of historic downtown Springfield, Prairie Archives has been serving Central Illinois since 1973. We have occupied three locations since our founding and our current store has been located at 522 E. Adams since 1992. We have approximately 250,000 books in stock, documents, manuscript material, posters, prints, comics, collectibles, magazines, political buttons, postcards and lots more! If you don't see a title you're looking for, please feel free to inquire; only a small part of our stock is catalogued. Our store hours are 10-5 Central time Monday through Saturday. We also carry a line of t-shirts, including the ever-popular "Abraham Lincoln: They'd have to shoot me to get me back to Springfield" and "Frank Lloyd Wright: I can design a building that would look good even in Springfield". Please inquire about our other designs, sizes and prices. And of course, we can't leave without mentioning Hannah, our golden retriever. She has run things here since she was a puppy [October, 1994]; she brings more business to the shop than anyone else. Always friendly, cheerful, and affectionate (especially when someone has food!) She has recently been joined by Ruby, a young and energetic black lab. Hannah and Ruby say "Come See Us!"
