A propos de cet article

12mo, pp. [1-2] 3-528, flyleaves at front and rear, original decorated brown cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind, yellow endpapers. First edition. Robert Dale Owen (1801-1877), social reformer, congressman from Indiana, American minister to Naples, eldest son of famous British socialist and humanitarian Robert Owen (1771-1858), spent most of his life in America. While minister to Naples, Owen "embraced Spiritualism, and worked to give the cult a scientific basis for its beliefs. His books, FOOTFALLS ON THE BOUNDARY OF ANOTHER WORLD (1860) and THE DEBATABLE LAND BETWEEN THIS WORLD AND THE NEXT (1871), show a strange mixture of credulousness and suspicion." - DAB. Both books attracted wide attention and were influential in the Spiritualist movement. To Robert Dale Owen Spiritualism became the most profound of all revelations. Until the end of his life he continued to write and speak boldly on the subject. Neat owner's inked signature and date on front free endpaper. Touch of wear to cloth at head of spine panel, a clean, tight, very good copy. (#95152). N° de réf. du libraire 95152
