Description du livre Forgotten Books, United States, 2016. Paperback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from A Forbidden Land: Voyages to the Corea With an Account of Its Geography, History, Productions, and Commercial Capabilities, C, C Notwithstanding the great pains the author has taken to render his account of the Corea in all respects as complete as possible, no one can be more alive to the many faults and shortcomings which this book still contains. On the other hand, he has been painfully careful to avoid the ight of fiction and imagination so often met with in works of travel, or to write and describe nothing but what he has personally seen and experienced, or knows from undoubted authority to be positively true. Little need be said of those chapters containing the geographical, historical, and other parts. There exists as yet no foreign map of the Corea which can lay claim to anything like correctness, and for this reason the author has abstained from attaching one to this work. The best in existence, and the one approaching nearest to correctness, is to be found in the last cartographical work published by the late Dr. A. Petermann, of Gotha. Nor is this want likely to be supplied until foreigners are furnished with the opportunity to extend their study to the topography of the country itself. Description du livre Putnam's Sons., New York., 1880. 1st American edition. Folding black and white wood engraving frontis, 20 full page black and white plates, 2 folding charts both charts have closed tears, 4cm and 12cm in length respectively, xix + 349pp + [2] pages showing Corean Alphabet Letters and 182 Single Syllables, upper cover pictorial gilt, upper hinge starting, spine faded, neat signature verso frontispiece, lacks half title, head of spine worn with a little minor loss, light wear cloth particularly at edges and corners, cloth little marked. A good clean tight copy. Prussian merchant and adventurer Ernest Oppert's 'A Forbidden Land: Voyages to the Corea.' numbers as among the earliest works on Korea by a European. Author and businessman, Oppert, left Hong Kong after the failure of his company there. Attracted by the possibilities of trade with Korea, a country at the time pursuing an isolationist policy, Oppert is best remembered for the Oppert Affair, an incident in which he and French priest Féron planned to excavate and remove from Korea the bones of the father of regent Yi Haeung, who ruled the country for his son, King Gojong with the aim of blackmailing him into opening the country for trade. (Wikipedia) In the first six chapters of this book Oppert uses European and translated Japanese and Chinese sources to introduce Korea and Korean affairs to the European reader. In the remaining chapters he describes his three voyages to Korea which he reports as being with the intention of establishing trade relations however "in this part, different worldviews between Oppert and the native officials were dramatically expressed in relation to the then priority of the "penning of the ports". By perceiving the "hermit kingdom" mainly in the dialogues with and references to China and Japan who opened their doors earlier, Korea was represented as "in-between" and "uncivilized"." (Kim Sun-ju - Representing Korea as the "Other": Ernst J. Oppert's A Forbidden Land Voyages to the Corea. Review of Korean Studies 2004). First published in German in 1880. English language editions were published in England and the United States within the same year. N° de réf. du libraire 149792
