Fugitives of the Pearl is a popularized history of the largest mass escape attempt of slaves in American history. It reads almost like a novel, though it's illustrated with black and white photographs. Paynter descended from two sisters who participated in the attempt. Paynter's account first appeared in the Journal of Negro History in 1916. First edition copy of the story in book form. There are no marks in the book save a previous owner signature on the front pastedown. The front board has several dark spots at the bottom of the front board.
