Feminism in Literature is the third set in the new Gale Critical Companion Collection which is designed to complement and extend the existing Literary Criticism Series. in literature and the humanities designed to meet the research needs of high school and undergraduate students.

From Booklist: This is the third in the Gale Critical Companion (GCC) series, joining The Harlem Renaissance (2002) and The Beat Generation (2003). The series is aimed at upper high-schoolers and undergraduates, with this set taking an in-depth look at the history of women and feminism throughout literature. Feminism is defined here as "a loose confederation of social, political, spiritual, and intellectual movements that places women and gender at the center of inquiry with the goal of social justice."

Overall arrangement is chronological, with volumes 1 and 2 covering the period from antiquity through the eighteenth century; volumes 3 and 4 the nineteenth century; and volumes 5 and 6 the twentieth century. Eleven topical entries averaging 90 pages in length discuss feminism within a specific time period or elaborate on subjects like misogyny, devotional literature, and lesbian literature. These are supplemented by 62 shorter (generally ranging between 20 and 50 pages) entries on major figures associated with feminist literature, such as Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, Margery Kempe, Christina Rossetti, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Entries follow the same format as the other GCC series: a brief introduction, a list of representative works, reprinted primary source documents (such as excerpts from a literary work or an author's personal letters), reprinted critical essays that are overviews or title specific, a list of annotated further readings, and citations to other Gale sources. Also included in the set are author, title, and subject indexes; a chronology of key events from women's history; black-and-white photographs; and informative sidebars.

Author entries are mostly focused on -nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and English writers, although a little more than 10 percent are international. All of the authors covered can be found elsewhere in other Gale series, but there is only a direct overlap of about 15 percent in content. Furthermore, the reprinted primary and secondary source material and blanket social perspective give students a wealth of information beyond a standard treatment of these "canon" figures. Not found is the breadth of coverage of more contemporary authors that sources like Greenwood's Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature (2004) or Feminist Writers (St. James, 1996) offer; those titles, for example, include such authors as Dorothy Allison, Ana Castillo, and Jeanette Winterson.

The question for libraries is whether this valuable new set is worth the $795. Will the students who would most benefit from the expanded treatment given be able to find their way to this resource? Recommended for libraries serving women's studies programs and with thorough literary criticism collections. Susan Gardner
