Description :

Language: English . Brand New Book. The First Green Wave traces the rise of Ontario s environmental movement. At the heart of the story is Pollution Probe, an organization founded in 1969 by students and faculty at the University of Toronto. In its first year of operation, Pollution Probe confronted Toronto s City Hall over its use of pesticides, Ontario Hydro over air pollution, and the detergent industry over pollution of the Great Lakes. The success of these actions inspired the founding of other environmental organizations across Canada and led to the development of initiatives now taken for granted, such as waste reduction and energy policy. Synopsis : Despite the pivotal role environmental organizations have played in addressing environmental issues, with the exception of Greenpeace, the emergence of organized environmental activism in Canada has gone largely unexplored. The First Green Wave addresses this void. Focusing primarily on Pollution Probe, one of Canada's earliest fully-professional environmental activist organizations, Ryan O'Connor charts the origins and development of first-wave environmental activism in Ontario from the late 1960s to the 1980s. This detailed examination of a modern Canadian environmental NGO provides insight into the early history and coming of age of environmental activism in Canada.

A propos de l'auteur: Ryan O'Connor teaches in the Department of Canadian Studies at Trent University, Canada.
