Seeking to capture the global market opportunity in flexible electronics, major U.S. competitors have initiated dedicated programs that are large in scope and supported with significant government funding to develop and acquire these new technologies, refine them, and ultimately manufacture them within their national borders. These national and regional investments are significantly larger than U.S. investment and more weighted toward later stage applied research and development.The Flexible Electronics Opportunity examines and compares selected innovation programs both foreign and domestic, and their potential to advance the production of flexible electronics technology in the United States. This report reviews the goals, concept, structure, operation, funding levels, and evaluation of foreign programs similar to major U.S. programs, e.g., innovation awards, ST parks, and consortia. The report describes the transition of flexible electronics research into products and to makes recommendations to improve and to develop U.S. programs. Through an examination of the role of research consortia around the world to advance flexible electronics technology, the report makes recommendations for steps that the U.S. might consider to develop a robust industry in the United States. Significant U.S. expansion in the market for flexible electronics technologies is not likely to occur in the absence of mechanisms to address investment risks, the sharing of intellectual property, and the diverse technology requirements associated with developing and manufacturing flexible electronics technologies.The Flexible Electronics Opportunity makes recommendations for collaboration among industry, universities, and government to achieve the critical levels of investment and the acceleration of new technology development that are needed to catalyze a vibrant flexible electronics industry. The conventional transformers are suffering from the drawbacks like they are heavy and bulky, sensitive to harmonics, voltage drop under load condition and concerns regarding mineral oil. To overcome these drawbacks new power electronic based transformers are developed. Many drawbacks of conventional transformer have been removed by Power Electronic Transformer (PET). Still PETs are suffering from drawbacks like less effective for power quality improvement, bidirectional power flow is not possible, not expandable to achieve higher ratings and independent operation of ports are not possible. A new topology of Power Electronic Transformer (PET) can be developed consisting of multiple port to get much flexibility in terms of applications. This project proposes a new Flexible Power Electronic Transformer (FPET). Design of FPET is done based on modules and a common dc link for all the ports. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Flexible electronics are emerging as an alternative to conventional Si electronics for large-area low-cost applications such as e-paper, smart sensors, disposable RFID tags, and solar cells. By utilizing inexpensive manufacturing methods such as ink-jet printing and roll-to-roll imprinting, flexible electronics can be made on low-cost plastic films just like printing newspapers. However, the key elements of flexible electronics, thin-film transistors (TFTs), have slower operating speeds and less reliability than their Si electronics counterparts. Furthermore, depending on the material property, TFTs are usually mono-type - either p- or n-type - devices. Making air-stable complementary TFT circuits is very challenging and not applicable to most TFT technologies. Existing design methodologies for Si electronics, therefore, cannot be directly applied to flexible electronics. Other inhibiting factors such as high supply voltage, large process variation, and lack of trustworthy device modelling also make designing larger-scale and robust TFT circuits a significant challenge. This book provides an in-depth overview of flexible electronics from their applications, manufacturing processes, device characteristics, to circuit and system design solutions. It first introduces the low-cost fabrication technology for flexible electronics, including ink-jet printing, screen printing, and gravure printing. The device characteristics and compact modelling of four major types of TFT technologies, including hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) TFT, polymer organic TFT, self-assembly monolayer (SAM) organic TFT, and metal oxide TFT, are illustrated. The book then gives an overview of digital and analog circuit design for flexible electronics from basic logic gates to a microprocessor. In order to accurately predict the time-dependent degradation of TFT circuits, it describes a reliability simulation framework that can predict the TFT circuits performance degradation under bias-stress. This framework has been validated using the amorphous-silicon (a-Si) TFT scan driver for TFT-LCD displays. Finally, the book provides an overview of flexible thin-film photovoltaics using different materials including amorphous silicon, CdTe, CIGS, and organic solar cells.
