Titre : Four Unposted Letters to Catherine
Éditeur : Hours Press, Paris
Date d'édition : 1927
Nancy Cunard wrote, in the chapter on Riding in These were the Hours: "It would have been good if Laura Riding had been in France in 1930 the best I could do was to read the Letters many times, and while doing so, it seemed to me that her intent was increasingly clear; all was so simply stated, and I had been looking, at first (though why?), for inner meanings. Rereading them just now confirms this, and it was also the reaction of Michael Roberts who, in the Poetry Review, wrote: ‘Give this volume to a child; it tells so simply, that an adult may find difficult, how good it is to live straight, independently of the tortuous contentions of others: how there is a difference between the doing which tends towards the general comfort and that which people "do, not for comfort or fun but in order to prove to themselves and to other people that they are people.’ It shows, too, the difference between the knowing which starts with self-knowledge and the learning which is the acquisition of facts."
