8vo, pp. x, 401. INSCRIBED by the author to W.W. Venable, Cincinnati, 1881. Hassaurek was born in Vienna 1832 and served in the student legion in the German revolution of 1848, being twice wounded. He came to the United States in 1848, settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and engaged in journalism, politics, and the practice of law. He was United States minister to Ecuador in 1861-65, and during the latter year became editor of the Cincinnati "Volksblatt." This is his only book, and is a good portrait of a country little known at the time in the US . He was well acquainted with the history of the country, as well as the current political situation. He found the people congenial and his writing shows that he was very sympathetic to their problems, not only those of the Crioles but of the Indians as well. Original green cloth, gilt lettering. Fine copy. N° de réf. du libraire 5294
