Quarto, ff 13, portrait of Quiroga, 202 pp; 1 f, 29 pp, with errata on verso. [Medina 2781; Beristain II:303] In the prologue Moreno relates the many sources he was able to consult, and his book is the basic source for Quiroga's biography. In fact Medina (Imprenta de Mexico) says of it:"Uno de los libros mas notables de su epoca en el pais en que fue escrito, por su estilo, por el criterio que revela en su autor y por la investigacion historica y critica que encierra." Bishop Quiroga [1470? - 1565] was one of the earliest of Mexico's proselytizers. A lawyer by profession, though known for his saintly character, he was consecrated as first bishop of Michoacan by Zumarraga himself. He attempted to create a kind of utopia on the lines of Sir Thomas More among the Indians of his diocese. He established hospitals and colleges as well. The second part of the book consists of the regulations for the hospitals he had founded for the care of the native population. Bound in contemporary vellum, with ties, only one of which is still present. Edges are stained red, with evidence of ownership ecclesiastical library -- a "marco de fuego" -- on upper edge. Smudge on first page of text of the biographichal part, but otherwise the paper is fresh. Very good copy. N° de réf. du libraire 6214
