A propos de cet article

Canada's first feminist literary journal, featuring contributions from leading North American Icelandic writers including Stephan G. Stephansson, Sigurdur Julius Johannsson, etc. as well as Canadian feminist leader Nellie McClung. We have in this set: Vol. III, No. 7, 11 (1900); Vol. IV, Nos. 3 (mis-labelled as 4 in original)-9, 12 (1901-1902); Vol V, No. 10 (May, 1905); Vol. VI, Nos. 3 -4 (1903) and Xmas Issue, Vol V, No. 5, 'Jolablad Freyju, 1902', plus Vol. XI, No. 5, (Dec., 1908). All issues disbound and re-stapled, except for special Christmas issue which retains original printed paper covers, with wear to spine - otherwise, all in Very Good condition. 22 X 15 cm. in size. Icelandic Canadian scholar Wilhelm Kristjanson in his book, The Icelandic People of Manitoba (p. 373) states that "Freya is to be rated a literary magazine as well as a woman sufrage journal. Featured were serial stories, biographical sketches of prominent people . . .,; poetry of a high order, including poems by Stephan G. Stephansson, Kiristinn Stefansson, Sig. Jul. Johannesson, Th. Th. Thorsteinsson and Magnus Markusson, literary reviews and a childrens' corner". This is an early publication in the North American Icelandic canon. Hjartar points out in Vesturheimsprent that this journal was published from 1898/99-1909/10). N° de réf. du libraire 35322
