Date d'édition : 1915

Reliure : Hardcover

Edition : 1st Edition

Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-311 [312], inserted frontispiece with color illustration by Noel Harrold, original blue cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. The author's first collection of short fiction. Linked short stories about children as seen through the eyes of Hugh Seymour, a young man in London who had been sent to England from Ceylon as a young boy, short-sighted, nonathletic, bullied, lonely and dreamy. The premise is clearly autobiographical. Hugh Walpole, born in New Zealand, came to England when he was a boy. His middle name is Seymour. Photos of him as an adult suggest a resemblance to his fictional character. The stories are about children and their perspective on things, but these are certainly not children's stories. "An unusual series of ambiguous fantasy tales concerning the nature of childhood. Includes some ghostly material, most notably ''Enery' and 'Epilogue: Hugh Seymour.'" - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 480. Three stories from THE GOLDEN SCARECROW were included in THE TARNHELM: THE BEST SUPERNATURAL STORIES OF HUGH WALPOLE (Tartarus Press, 2003): "A Prologue: Hugh Seymour," "Angelina" and "'Enery." Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). NCBEL IV 759. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, several minor scuffs to rear cover, lower left corner bruised, a very good copy with bright cover stamping. (#109463). N° de réf. du libraire 109463
