Large octavo, two volumes: pp. [1-4] 2-480; [1-4] 482-951 , 30 full color covers and 520 black and white illustrations by A. Robida, original pictorial boards printed in red and green with green cloth shelf back stamped in black, a.e.g., gray endpapers. First edition. The largest, longest, and among the more gruesome, future war novel, and one of the major works of French SF of the period. Obviously inspired by the Russo-Japanese War, in which the Japanese decisively defeated the Russians, LA GUERRE INFERNALE ., a French pulp created by Pierre Giffard and Albert Robida, ran for thirty issues in 1908. "LA GUERRE INFERNALE . was about the world war of 1937, which began between Germany and Great Britain and France, dragged in the United States, and then took a right turn when the Japanese, dastardly Yellow Perils that they are, take advantage of the war in Europe to attack. They conquer Europe and attack and conquer most of the United States. This forces the British, Germans, Russians, and Americans to unite into the 'White Wall' and attack the Japanese" (Internet description). LA GUERRE INFERNALE is ". a most abominable (and perspicacious) account of what modern warfare will look like. The text is mainly made up of fictional excerpts from newspapers and top-secret H.Q. documents. These constitute a memorial to scientific massacre: to biological warfare and systematic (and highly rationalized) genocide, with its crematoria, its carnage involving millions of people killed by flame-throwers . Juvenile reading, as I said! Thanks to the horror of (Chinese) tortures and the cold efficiency of (Western) technological discoveries, the number of deaths escalates. At the beginning, the war is merely a local one between Germany, on the one side, and Great Britain and France on the other. Soon, however, Japan and the U.S. become involved (cf. Summary, LA GUERRE INFERNALE, p. 513), and scientific destructiveness gets out of hand, ending in a racial confrontation between Caucasians and Mongoloids ('Jap contre Sam,' LA GUERRE INFERNALE, pp. 545 ff.)." - Marc Angenot, "Albert Robida's Twentieth Century," Science Fiction Studies 30 (July 1983), p. 240. The original thirty parts each had a cover with a full color illustration by Robida (complete sets are rarely found and quite pricey when offered for sale). The book bind-up (as offered here) was issued in various formats (including 650 copies on better paper). This copy is part of the cheaper format issue which uses the same pulpy paper of the parts issue, but is one of the copies published with the color front covers bound in. Clarke, Voices Prophesying War: Future Wars 1763-3749 (1992), p. 233. Versins, Encyclopédie de l'Utopie des Voyages Extraordinaires et de la Science Fiction, (1972), pp. 367-8. Lofficier and Lofficier, French Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Pulp Fiction, p. 349. Boards rubbed and dusty, a very good copy with nearly fine interior, quite a nice copy overall. (#135730).
