Description :

These 3 bibles which are dated from 1830, about 1834, and 1846, contain marriage, birth, and death records, both handwritten and period 1850-1880's newspaper clippings from several branches of the families of Col. Amos Atwell's (of the Rhode Island militia (about 1730-1805) daughter Sarah, who married Gideon Olney. Sarah lived from about 1756 to 1836. One bible has the records of her son - (Col.) George Rufus Atwell Olney (1782-1841), and her grandson - Amos Atwell Olney (1808-1856). This bible is inscribed: "From - Gideon W. Olney - To his much loved and most affectionate mother - Sarah Atwell Olney - Dighton (Mass.), May 15, 1834". Recorded are: Sarah Atwell Olney who died April 4, 1836, 80 years old; Col. George Rufus Atwell Olney 1782-1841; his wife Ann (Smith) Olney who died on Sept. 1858, 69 years old; Charles Remington Olney, born Feb. 11, 1815, and died Jan. 2, 1882; Amos Atwell Olney born about 1808 and died in 1856 "nearly 49 y.o.", and his wife Eliza who was born around 1808 and died in Feb. 1871 - 63 y.o., in Dighton, Mass. This bible contains about 8 entries, with the latest being the death of Charles Remington Olney in 1882. Bound in very good, full calf and published by Kimber and Sharpless in Philadelphia, not dated, but early 1830's. The second bible was published by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1846, and is in black leather. "The Illuminated Bible" (not in color, but with many illustrations). Both covers and the spine are detached. This bible was a gift from Charles R. Olney (1815-1882), and was inscribed by him to George A. and Georgiana W. Meacham (Charles R. Olney's daughter). This bible records the births and some of the deaths, of members of the Olney and Meacham families, with some Mitchells. The first records are the births of George Rufus Atwell Olney in 1782, and his wife Ann Smith in 1789. Their children were Amos Atwell Olney, Amelia Ann Olney, and Charles Remington Olney - born between 1808 and 1815. Charles Remington Olney and his wife - Sarah Bradford Jones, had 7 children, born between 1836 and 1854 - Georgiana Wilmarth, Frances Amelia, Sarah Frances, Amelia Andros, Charlotte Peckham, Helen, and Charles Theodore Olney. Sarah Bradford Jones was the daughter of Gardner Jones (born 1790) and Sally Ripley (1792-1873). Georgiana Wilmarth Olney married George Alexander Meacham of Cambridge, Mass. on Oct. 7, 1858, and they had 6 children born between 1859 and 1874 - Ellen Alexander, Georgiana, Charlotte Mabel, Maud Frances, Grace Stedman, and Alexander George (?Rex) Meacham. Grace Stedman Meacham married the Rev. Francis Augustus Foxcroft in 1894, which is how the 2 Olney bibles and the Foxcroft family bible are together. Grace's sister Georgina married Thomas Mathewson Mitchell of Taunton, Mass., and had 4 children born between 1882 and 1888 - Marion, Philip Albert, Catherine Lovell, and Russell Bradford Mitchell. Some of these families lived in Cambridge, Mass. and Dover, Mass. There are about 45 family entries in this bible including period newspaper clippings. The third bible is inscribed - "F. A. Foxcroft - From my mother - Jan. 1, 1832. The bible is bound in red calf, with the back cover detaching, and a worn spine. There are entries for 11 marriages, about 25 births, and about 8 deaths. The earliest marriage record is for Francis Augustus Foxcroft, who married Betsy (Elizabeth?) Cook on June 5, 1808. Their 4 children were - Francis Augustus, Emmeline, George Augustus, and Israel Cook Foxcroft - born between 1809 and 1817. There may be 3 or 4 generations all with the name of Francis Augustus Foxcroft, and there may be one generation in the 1830's to 1850's that hasn't been fully recorded. George Augustus Foxcroft married Harriet Elizabeth Goodrich on April 20, 1837, and had 8 children born between 1840 and 1853 - Harriet Elisabeth, George Augustus, Alfred Henry, Emmeline, Arthur Goodrich, Francis, Lucy Goodrich, and Edwin Phillips Foxcroft.
