The sermons in this book were composed and preached in Canada, by the leading Icelandic-Canadian clergyman of his day, Jón Bjarnason (1845-1914) despite the fact the place of publication is Iceland. PUBLISHER: Reykjavík, Sigurður Kristjánsson, 1900. DESCRIPTION: viii, 750 p., [1] leaf of plates : portrait. Spine has been removed and laid in the book; one signature (group of pages) loosening from text block, but still holding, otherwise VG in tooled brown leather over boards. Canadiana. The author, Bjarnason was the first among clergyman of the Icelandic immigrant communities of Manitoba and "a towering . . . ecclesiastical leader, often considered greatest of them all", according to Stefan Einarson (see Einarson's A History of Icelandic Literature, N. Y., Johns Hopkins Press, 1957, p 340; see Einarsson's History of Icelandic Prose Writers, 1800-1940, Ithica, N. Y., Cornell, 1948.). Bjarnason's sermon's have historic significance in that he was the more liberal clergyman whose disputes with the conservative Reverend Pall Thorlaksson was a key factor in a major split in the Canadian Icelandic community. An Icelandic high school in Winnipeg, the Jón Bjarnasson Academy, was named after him. He also edited the Icelandic-Canadian periodical, Sameiningin (The Unification).
