A propos de ce titre
Both volumes combine a large number of photographs/drawings/paintings and maps with the text. The maps are excellent. Volume I focuses on the Seven Days' Battles of 1862. It is the more cohesive of the two volumes, but there are several good campaign studies to have modeled this work on. Besides its excellent maps, Volume I does not offer anything new to the historian, and works by Sears, Burton, et al are far superior. What is also a shame - skirmishes such as "Second Malvern Hill," 5 August 1862, which would have fit perfectly in Manarin's work in both scope and context, and lent some originality to it - are ignored. Volume II takes on the more challenging task of operations outside Richmond from July through December 1864, where few historians have previously tred. The author's research is adequate to the task, but the writing reads more like a working draft than a published book. The book trends in a chronological manner, but the author continually jumps back and forth in three and four day increments. In discussing battles, the events of individual days are repeated several times, with each recitation using some of the same information, and some different information. Units' strengths are given repeatedly for the same day, seperated by several pages and several hundred men (to put it in context, that's 25-50%), artillery batteries suddenly switch armament...it gets to be more like peeling an onion than reading. There's good stuff buried in there, but its difficult to get to. The maps are again excellent, but the accompanying text is at best disjointed and in places incoherent. One wonders what a strong editor might have done for this book. Overall the maps are great. I could deal with the presence of all the pictures if the text was well done, which is where I'll leave that. There is good information on the campaigning in 1864, but it is a challenging read.
