Description :

Quarto, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] [9] 10-414, original boards with printed paper title label, untrimmed. First edition. The first part of Bradford's three volume history of Massachusetts, followed by two parts published in 1825 and 1829 respectively, extending the history through the year 1820. A standard early Massachusetts history. This volume is a major source for Massachusetts history during this period. "The work of a gentleman, with whom New England history has been the study of a life, and who, from the official relation which he long sustained as Secretary of the Commonwealth, enjoyed peculiar advantages for its prosecution." - N. A. R., xliv. 536; xxx. I (quoted by Sabin). "The author was one of the most thorough and systematic of the earlier students of Massachusetts history. His style was clear and forcible, but without ornament. His sympathies were strong in favor of the colonial course in the Revolution. These volumes are of importance to the investigator and are a credit to the scholarship of their time" - Larned. Howes B-698. Sabin 7220. Covers detached, boards worn, some scattered foxing to text block, internally very good or better. Rarely found nowadays in its original binding. (#133118). N° de réf. du libraire

Description du livre Richardson and Lord, Boston, Massachusetts, 1822. Disbound. État : Fair. First Edition Letter Press. First of Alden's three-volume work. Octavo, 9 1/4" tall, 414 pages holding together in the original sewn signatures but lacking covers, endpapers and flyleaf. This copy appears never to have been rebound as was the custom of the time. Description du livre anticat16 (illustrateur). Boston: Richardson and Lord, 1822. First edition. 414 pp. Full tree calf, leather spine labels lettered in gilt, the covers both detached and the spine partly chipped away. Lacking the front fly leaf and possibly a half-title leaf. The first of three volumes by Bradford, followed by volumes published in 1825 and 1829. This copy is distinguished by having been in the Library of the Department of State, so indicated by a pen inscription on the title page, dated Dec. 15, 1822, also by a library label on the inner front cover, and an ink stamp. At the foot of the spine, the binding is stamped 'State Department'. A small purple rubber stamp over the label indicated that it was a surplus duplicate from the Library of Congress. Howes B-698. A worn copy with an interesting provenance. N° de réf. du libraire 52976
