Very early edition. With Illustrations on steel and wood by the author. PAGES, with marbled edges: viii (Contents & Preface) + 384 (Vol. 1); xii + 372 (Vol. 2). ILLUSTRATIONS, all b/w: 46 plates (23 in each volume) + many drawings in text and one on each of the title pages. CONDITION: The marble patterned paper covered boards and the gilt decorated banded spines have a little edgewear and discolouration. No inscriptions. Bright, clean unmarked interiors. Tight bindings. Heavy brown spotting on title pages and on some plates, mainly in the margins. Pale brown spotting and occasional darker spotting elswhere through each book. Generally the interiors are bright and clean. Same name in older, stylish writing on the second free endpaper in each book. At some point this set of books has been rebacked with the insertion of new marbled endpapers and blank endpapers at front and rear . Tight bindings. N° de réf. du libraire 005869
