Description :

Octavo size, pp 281, xiii (merchants' directories), followed by publisher's booklist. First edition thus, but some of the material is from his "Border states of Mexico", "enlarged and revised," as he says. Numerous woodcuts added, often focussing on the industrial developments visible in the major towns. Hamilton's guidebook is concerned with economic prospects of Mexico, rather than a tourist guide. He is especially good on the mining situation in the northern states, but has filled it out with a survey of the entire country. For example, he has a listing of the principal merchants of Mexico City, then with a population 280,000 inhabitants, and another of the principal mechants of the country. Hamilton was a San Francisco attorney: he wrote another book on Mexican law intended for an American audience. But his interests were broad and included one of the first publications of the Epic of Gilgamesh, done into verse by Hamilton. Blue embossed publisher's cloth, title material in gold. Hamilton's guidebook is concerned with economic prospects of Mexico, rather than a tourist guide. SIGNED: Presentation copy from the author to Gen. W.S. Rosecrans (Civil War - U.S.A.) and with Rosecrans' signature on title page. Rosecrans was ambassador to Mexico and promotor of American investment in that country. Blind-stamped blue cloth, gilt title material on spine; hinges rough but quite solid. Very good copy with important association. N° de réf. du libraire 7073
