A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

This is a memoir of Professor Shepherd based on the struggle for freedom of colonized and exploited peoples. Many are now victims of crimes against humanity imposed by former colonial powers and by corrupt elites.

Since the end of World War II the new global human rights movement has been shaped by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1956; but numerous failures have accompanied this progress towards the goals of freedom and peace.

Prof.Shepherd recounts the way human rights advocates and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)provided invaluable support for expanding human rights protection in Africa and the world. There are many lessons here for the classroom and for those who seek to serve the cause of peace and justice through understanding, activism and compassion.

From the Publisher:

They Are Us is a human interest account by a scholar and an activist who has been involved in the struggle of colonized peoples and later victims of global apartheid and war crimes.

Professor Shepherd spent his early career in establishing human rights organizations such as the Federation of Uganda African Farmers in British East Africa. He returned to America to help found the American Committee on Africa, now fifty years later Africa Action.

As a Professor of International and African Studies at the University of Denver from the 1960s to the present, Dr. Shepherd and his colleagues have been ahead of their times in working for sanctions against Apartheid South Africa, opposing the Vietnam War and supporting the new human rights regime. They have argued for placing human rights at the center of foreign policy and made some progress such as the during the Carter Presidency but have faced many setbacks in later Administrations. He gives credit to the Clinton Administration for extending its support to new

United Nations Agencies and particularly the International Criminal Court but finds great disappoitnment with the Bush II Administration for turning its back on global progress at the UN World Summit Conference on Racism and Xenophobia in Durban South Africa. After the attacks on New York and the Pentagon of Sept.ll the U.S Administration has become increasingly bellicose and imperialistic, rather than pursuing the world agenda of justice and peace through international law and diplomacy.

Through experience and scholarship the author demonstrates how triumph such as the defeat of Apartheid in South Africa is often followed by new cases of violations of human rights such as increasing debt dependency, the spread of HIV/AIDs and acts of genocide along with growing war crimes. He argues that the major problems remain of educating and persuading the powerful to recognize their responsibility for supporting basic human needs. The US now must choose between building an American empire or helping the rest of the world to build a new world order based on human rights and international law.

The general public as well as scholars and activists will find much of interest in this work.It is an inspiring story of those who still believe the world can move toward tolerance, mutual understanding and economic progress as the basis for living together on this beleaguered beautiful planet.
