Description du livre Hardcover. État : Good. First editions of the first four volumes (Chuo 47, 1-4), with the final two volumes in second edition (not in Chuo). ‘Hume published his History in reverse chronological order, beginning with the Stuart monarchs (1754, 1757), moving to the House of Tudor (1759), and ending with the earlier periods (1762). The retrograde appearance of the volumes itself became a matter of discussion for several critics. Once finished, the volumes were republished as complete sets in the proper chronological order. Hume intended to continue his History past the period of the Restoration, but his plans were never fulfilled. He initially hesitated for fear that the “prejudices” against his former volumes had not yet subsided (Hume to Andrew Miller, January 14, 1765)’ (James Fieser, Early Responses to Hume’s History of England, Thoemmes Press 2003, xiv). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 6 volumes, 4to, viii, 424, [92 index]; viii, 446, [1]; viii, 402; iv, 403-739, [1]; viii, 464; [ii], v, 457 pp., uniform contemporary half calf with contrasting labels (numbered in chronological order rather than order of publication), rubbed and scuffed, spine ends and corners worn, first volume with lower compartment of backstrip missing, all volumes with 'Ex Libris Alexander G.A. Mitchell Gaston' inscribed on front free endpaper, uniform light browning and occasional spots, otherwise clean, altogether a good set, scarce in any condition. In Hume's lifetime, he was more famous as a historian than as a philosopher and this six-volume History of England continued to be a bestseller well into the nineteenth century and was the standard work on English history for many years. During the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Hume tutored the Marquise of Annandale (who was officially described as a "lunatic") This engagement ended in disarray after about a year, but it was then that Hume started his great historical work The History of Great Britain which would take him over fifteen years and run to more than a million words. In 1752, Hume was appointed librarian to the College of Advocates in Edinburgh. This provided him with tremendous resources and sufficient time and the opportunity to devote much of this time to the writing of this magnificent six-volume History of England. This work was not a new and independent interest of Hume's, rather, he saw it as a continuation of his other work, a "practical application" of his theses on politics. Beautiful contemporary full calf bindings. Each spine with five ribs and gilt lettering and volume numbers the second and third compartments.
