Decorative papercovered boards, with bright repeated design, blue cloth spine. Upper edge bumped, top of spine faded. Internally vg, neat owner's name on ffep. In original crimson dw, complete, but tanned with a few marks, and with edgewear, chipped at spine extremities. First published 1722, one of Defoe's less-well known novels, follows an orphaned boy from a life of poverty and crime to colonial prosperity, military and marital imbroglios and religious conversion. With an ineresting foreword by A.H., suggesting that its lack of popularity through the Victorian era was due to its realistic and unsentimental depiction of a life of crime.
