Description du livre F W Cheshire, Melbourne, 1969. Hard Cover. État : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG. Photos, Art, Documents (illustrateur). 1st. 25cm By 15.5cm. An interesting and informative study of migration to Australia from the early 1800s to the arrival of many refugees following the rebelion against Soviet occupation of 1956. While the book focuses on Hungarian immigrants it is probably also representative those who left a number of Central European countries for Australia. The fist Hungarian to settle in Australia arrived at Sydeny in 1833, accompanied by a his wife and son. A few years later, with the discovery of gold in NSW and Victoria, numbers of Hungarians were attracted by the lure of riches. Unlike the fist few who arrived, mainly skilled artisans, the miners were largely driven into voluntry exile by being on the wrong side in wars or revoluntions, or for political reasons. These motives, plus difficult economics, discrimination and land issues, resulted in several waves of Hungarians deciding to resettle Australia, particularly after US entry restrictions (the favoured destination for departing Hungarians) were imposed. Egon Kunz, has examined in depth the factors that drove his compatriots to emigrate. While conflicts and thier ftermath, were a major driver other factors also influenced those who left. (The author, an academic from Budapest University, arrived in 1949 as a displaced person following WWII and completed his two year compulstory "labour contract" before joining the staff of the Mitchell Library. later moving to the Australian National Univiesity at Canberra.) He therefore writes with the benefit of expert research as well and having "been there, done that." His study examines the contribution that Hungarians made to Australa. socially, industrially, in commerce, science, education, arts and culture and sport -- in fact in all walks of life and enterprise. His detailed account of Hungary-to-Australia immigration over many generations gives an insight into the factors that led them to a new life in a most distant land, providing at the same time a valuable contribution to social history. First edition of 1969 published in Melbourne by F W Cheshire, 301 pages including five appendices, bibliography and indices of names and subjects, 15 b/w illustrations --- photos, art, portraits and documents. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Colour DJ is VG with two tape repaired tears top edge, few short tears and chips. N° de réf. du libraire 004840
