Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8] 9-317 [318-320: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks], original brown cloth, front panel ruled in yellow-green, spine panel lettered and ruled in yellow green. First edition. Collects thirteen stories; ". a more varied collection whose best weird story is the haunted house story 'The Frontier Guards.'" - Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-200. "It has been far too easy to put Wakefield in the (rather roomy) pigeonhole of 'traditional English ghost stories', jumbling him together with such truly minor figures as Dare and Munby, etc. It's true that he lacked the self-branding instincts of Blackwood, M. R. James. Dunsany and Hodgson (to name the four contemporary British giants with which Lovecraft closes out his 'Essay on Supernatural Horror in Literature'). But variety is not necessarily a defect. Wakefield also had a certain robustness in his voice that is unexpected in weird fiction. It seems fair to say that the no-man's-land (or everyman's-land) in between the obvious giants and the obvious pygmies is where Wakefield belongs." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1643. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2275. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 477. Bleiler (1978), p. 201. Reginald 14766. Hubin, p. 419. A fine copy in very attractive, solid very good to near fine pictorial dust jacket with some shelf wear at edges, mainly fraying at spine ends and corner tips, several closed tears along top and bottom edges, largely to rear panel, and minor dust soiling to spine and rear panels. An uncommon book rarely found in dust jacket. (#149351). N° de réf. du libraire 149351
