Octavo, pp. 119, double columns, early black binder's cloth, spine panel titled in gold. Later (Second?) British edition. Bird's second novel was published in book format in America in 1835 by Carey, Lea and Blanchard as THE INFIDEL; OR, THE FALL OF MEXICO, and in England the same year by Bentley as CORTES; OR THE FALL OF MEXICO. It was published as part of THE NOVEL NEWSPAPER which ran to at least twelve volumes issued from 1839 to 1842. The main source for the content of this publication was American fiction which was gleefully pirated, a counter-campaign against the American pirates of English fiction. Two other works are combined here: ORMOND, OR THE SECRET WITNESS by Charles Brockden Brown (1839), pp. 86, and UNDINE; OR, THE SPIRIT OF THE WATERS, A MINIATURE ROMANCE Translated from the German of Baron de la Motte Fouque by the Rev. Thomas Tracy (1840), pp. 32. Each part has its own separate title leaf. See Sadleir 3752. Cloth worn at spine ends and corner tips, a very good copy. (#154641). N° de réf. du libraire
