Éditeur : London
Date d'édition : 1784
Uncoloured engraving from the Atlas of the official account of Captain Cooks Third Voyage which explored the NW Coast of America in search of a North-West passage. From the drawing by John Webber, artist on Cooks third voyage. Cook called at this bay, just south of Bering Strait in 1778 in his search for wood and water. The exchange rate was highly in his favour and four makeshift knives brought him 400 pounds of fish. A man & woman are depicted outside their house. The woman carries a baby on her back & a kyak is drawn up outside the house. Cook's Third voyage was unprecedented in the amount of money spent on publication with no expense spared on production of the plates. As Sir Joseph Banks said, the expenditure was 'to contribute much to the ornament of the work, as our plates are far better engraved than preceding ones.the publick have a right to that indulgence'. 22 x 37cm. A fine large margin copy. N° de réf. du libraire 110514
