Herder was a major influence on?and even a founder of?numerous branches of philosophy and social science. He can be credited with establishing philology and hermeneutics, and he laid the methodological groundwork for modern linguistics and anthropology. A student of Kant, he soon rejected the rationalistic excesses of the Enlightenment in pursuit of a synthesis of the rational and the sentimental. He was a leader in the Sturm und Drang movement and a close friend of Goethe. His work subsequently influenced the development of Romanticism and German nationalism. Hegel, Schleiermacher, and Nietzsche?among others?all owe him an intellectual debt. Amidst all this, he also found time to be a Lutheran pastor. The present work, whose title is commonly translated as 'Outlines of a Philosophy of the History of Man', was never actually completed, and Herder himself felt it to be the least of his works, but it has nonetheless come to stand as a classic. First printed 1784-1791 in 4to, this printing is in four 12mo volumes: hardcover, with original papered boards, handwritten spine labels, and red page edges. Overall the set is in fair condition. Boards are edgeworn and scuffed; corners bumped. Paper peeling from spine of vol. 4. Title page in vol. 4 is unbound but present. Light foxing throughout. Notations to rear endpaper of vol. 1; text itself appears to be unmarked in all volumes. Front hinge cracked in vols. 3 and 4; binding otherwise sound. A well-worn but largely intact copy of an early edition of this influential work. N° de réf. du libraire 170350
