Synopsis : Many Maori place names date back to the very earliest days of habitation in Aotearoa New Zealand. Some, in fact, originated in the Hawaiki homeland and were adapted to the new land. Whatever their origin, most reflect the Maori's closeness to the forces of nature and incorporate common words for everyday things. Lavishly illustrated, this dictionary explains and interprets over 1500 place names as well as providing a guide to pronunciation.
A propos de l'auteur: Born in 1908 in Auckland, A.W. Reed joined his uncle A.H. Reed's religious supply business in Dunedin in 1925, and established its general book publishing business in Wellington in 1932. Until his retirement in 1971, he helped build A.H. & A.W. Reed into New Zealand's leading publishing house. A prolific author as well as a publisher, he penned over 200 books on a vast range of topics covering New Zealand, the South Pacific and Australia. Seven of his books are in print today, including the Reed Concise Maori Dictionary and the Reed Dictionary of Maori Place Names. He died in 1979.
