1800 first edition thus, Printed by R. and W. Dean, for T. Haydock (Manchester, England), 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches tall embossed blue full leather bound, gilt ruling to front and rear covers and elaborate gilt decoration and lettering to spine, all page edges gilt, brown endpapers, engraved title page, vi, 207, [3] pp. Oddly lacking the last four pages of the table of contents at the rear of the volume, but is an otherwise complete copy, including front and rear blank endpapers. Prior owner initials ('H.F.') in gilt to front cover. Moderate to heavy rubbing and edgewear to covers, especially at tips and along exterior hinges. Mild staining to title page. Otherwise, a very good copy of this scarce Manchester edition of the translation of Imitatio Christi by English Roman Catholic Bishop Richard Challoner (1691-1781). The British Library (English Short Title Catalog No. T93924) only locates three copies at institutions worldwide - at the British Library, at the National Library of Wales and at Harvard University. ~KM3~ Richard Challoner was an English Roman Catholic bishop, and a leading figure of English Catholicism during the greater part of the 18th century. He is perhaps most famous for his revision of the Douay Rheims translation of the Bible. Challoner's goal in his translations was to make the classics of Catholic Spirituality accessible to Catholics, in English. To this end he translated this work, 'De Imitatione Christi' (the Imitation, or Following, of Christ) in 1737. The Imitation of Christ was written (or at a minimum, transcribed) by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. They were copied together in one manuscript as early as 1427, by Kempis, and copied (and later printed) together fairly consistently thereafter. Soon after hand-copied versions of the Imitatio Christi initially appeared, the printing press was invented, and it was among the first books after the Bible to be printed. Description du livre 12mo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with engraved frontispiece [but bound without the plates sometimes present at the head of each of the four books], neat eighteenth century signature on title, some moderate age-staining throughout; attractively bound in eighteenth century full calf, sides with double frame border in gilt enclosing floral frame border stopped at corners with decorative spray, back with five raised bands, all compartments richly framed and tooled in gilt, doublures tooled in blind, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, corners bruised, a very good, tight copy in sympathetically restored period binding. With two nineteenth century inscriptions recording circumstances of ownership on blank preliminary. The engraved frontispiece of the Crucifixion is by Van der Gucht. Stanhope's translation of Kempis's spiritual classic first appeared in the previous year. In this paraphrastic rendering the pithy style of the original is presented as flowing sentences more in tune with eighteenth century taste. The edition was continually reprinted during the next 150 years, and in 1886 Henry Morley edited it for Lubbock's 'One Hundred Books'. Expertly rebacked using original gilt-ruled tree calf boards and a new brown leather spine. Original boards have mild to moderate rubbing and edgewear, especially to tips. At the top margin of the title page, ink prior owner names of oxfordshire residents Elizabeth Guest-Williams (1824-1902) and her son, Rev. William Seller Guest-Williams (1853-1907). Ink signature of the most recent prior owner, Canon Alyn Arthur Guest Williams (1888-1974), grandson of William Seller Guest-Williams of Christleton, a village near Cheshire, England. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - exceptionally clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare first edition of the renowned George Stanhope edition, which was reprinted over the ensuing years more than twenty times. In fact, Stanhope's was likely the most popular English edition of the Imitation of Christ throughout the eighteenth century and into the nineteenth. References: Wing (1996), T946; ESTC No. R9577. The English Short Title Catalog records only seven copies in North America, and American Book Prices Current shows no copies coming up for auction in the past 30+ years. ~KMP~ [2.0P] George Stanhope (1660-1728) was a clergyman of the Church of England, rising to be Dean of Canterbury and a Royal Chaplain, and a leading figure in church politics of the early 18th century. Despite the popularity of this translation of the Imitation, as well as prior translations or adaptations of Epictetus, Charron's 'Books on Wisdom' and and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, Stanhope's style has been criticized as overly paraphrastic, using 'flowing sentences that pleased the reader in Queen Anne's reign.'
