Any copies of 19th-century editions of this pioneering childhood education treatise by the inventor of the playground are exceptionally and unusually rare. This copy includes the rare folding plate depicting Wilderspin's ideal school and playground (his own invention). Bound in full plum 19th- century polished calf, spine with raised bands and gilt tooling (largely geometric with interlocking leaf panels within each compartment, covers borred in gilt with twin rules and rosettes at corners (rubbing to spine, boards and corners; some staining with covers; minor creasing to several leaves; some browning and minor foxing). PROVENANCE: With the ink signature (on title), and presentation label of Edward Jenner Jerram (1811- 1885), a merchant working between Cape of Good Hope and Brazil. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
