5 inch by 7-inch classic Shahn ink drawing, of an angel playing the (non electric) violin, signed bottom right, brought as a dinner gift in the 1950s to Mt. Vernon, N.Y. In the 1930’s Shahn’s first exhibition was in honour of the anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti, whom the American State murdered on flimsy evidence despite worldwide protests. Later, that pre-Warholian style of Shahn’s influenced a generation of graphic designers (Andy included), Shahn’s utopian socialism producing e.g. Skowhegan School and all its donated properties, lakes, forests, artist’s houses, grants-what goes round comes round. Sometimes. Editioned lithos abound; drawings by Shahn rarely come to market. N° de réf. du libraire 258
